Do you mind getting your hands dirty? If not, you can use gloves, but I find it works better without them. It only stains for a day or two.

You don't need to go to a hairdresser at all. Look at the parts of your hair that you want to streak red and clip them. Take your red hair dye, dip your hands into it, and then SMOTHER your hair with it. Read the instructions to see how long to leave it on. Then wrap it in foil just so it won't get on your blonde hair. This usually works best with a friend.

As for what dye to use, don't use a dye for the whole head, and don't buy it from a grocery store. You probably won't find the red you're wanting. I assume you want a deep or funky red, not a natural red,

Manic Panic or Punky Color will have the best colors for you. They have varying shades of red and are usually sold at any beauty supply store. For an example, here are some reds:

you can do it at home but if you go to a hair dresser it would look better. also if your not sure if you want to do it you can get temperary hair dye. it washes out when you wash your hair. my neighbor does her own hilights and she uses this cap that makes you pull strands of hair through it and then dye those strands. it looks really good. i suggest you go and talk to someone at a professional hair place such as sally's. they can probebly help you the most besides a hair dresser.

It could be done at home, but chances are they would fade quickly, and maybe go a little orange.

at a salon, it would stay a stronger red longer.

Goto a store near you that sells off color hair dye's, Sally's beauty supply if you have one. There are a lot of varities to choose from, some are good, some aren't. It has been 2 years since I dyed by hair, but just ask the workers.

Far as doing it yourself there's a plastic cap you can buy that has holes in it. Theres a tool that you pull the hair through with and then you apply the dye for how ever long the bottle says. To insure it don't get on the rest of your hair through the holes you can use aluminum foil to wrap it in.

Then just wash it out and your done. If you use permented dye it will fade as you wash it too, red will fade to a pink after a while, to keep it red longer use your own condishiner and put some red dye in it, that helps put the color back in after you have washed it out.

If you want it red as in unnatural looking red (neon red) then I suggest you use special effects hair dye. It lasts longer than Manic Panic and in the end will cost you a lot less. Go to a site such as amphigory.com or haircrazy.com to see pictures of people with red Special Effects hair dye.

To get the color you'll first have to bleach your hair to a pale blonde. Since you're already a blonde, in order to lighten it you should use a 20 vol bleach. I suggest you use Loreal Quick Blue bleach as it is the most recommended bleach among people who dye their hair unnatural colors.

A day or two after bleaching your hair apply the red hair dye. Leave it on for an hour+. Leaving it on for 15 minutes is ok, but leaving it on for an hour will ensure more vibrancy and a longer lasting color. Plus it won't harm your hair since the dye works as a conditioner and doesn't contain any bad chemicals.

You can totally do this yourself. You don't need to go to a hairdresser. I was a first timer bleaching my hair and dying it neon red and it came out wonderful. Sites like haircrazy.info give step by step instructions on how to do it.

If you are considering neon red, I suggest you don't go for Manic Panic. It lasts a few days at most and I've heard far more complaints about how quickly it washes out than how long it stays. I've researched different dyes (Manic Panic, Punky, Special Effects, etc...) and Special Effects was clearly the most favored among dyers.

Ignore what those people told you, and listen to me. I have naturally blonde hair too, and I always dye my own hair. A day doesn't go by when someone doesn't compliment me on my hair. If you want to dye parts of your hair red, go to Sally's and buy something from the Ion Color line...you'll need to find the color of red that you want and a bottle of developer. Your best bet would be to get a tube of the cream color that says 4RV or 5RV depending on what color you want to dye it. Then buy some "10 Volume" developer. It's in a purple bottle. Get some aluminum foil, lots of hair clips, an applicator brush, and a non-metal bowl if you don't have one. Just use a glass bowl from home. It won't stain it. You'll probably want chunky pieces of red in your hair, and if you want small ones, don't do it. It will just look dumb. also, don't dye the hair in your part. Like wherever you part your hair, make sure that there will be some hair on top of and covering the hair you're dying red. It will have a cooler effect, and it will also hide your roots, and you won't have to color your hair so often. Section off your hair that you want to color, THEN mix your color after you have the hair you want to be dyed separated out from the hair you want to stay blonde. I recommend dying pieces of hair that are about 1.5'' to 2'' wide and about a quarter of an inch high. It'll look cool and chunky, but not like you got shot in the head and that you have blood-soaked patches of hair. Trust me on this. Once you have your pieces separated out, put a piece of foil under the chunk of hair to be dyed...right up to the scalp. Then get a good amount of the mixed color onto the brush and brush it onto the hair. Your hair should stick to the foil. Completely saturate ALL the hair you want dyed, or when you wash it out and style it, it will look tiger striped. Just use the brush to work the color through your hair. when you have all the color on, fold the foil up in half to keep the rest of your hair protected from getting color on it. do this to every strand, then wait about an hour. Blonde hair doesn't pick up red well, so just have some patience and wait that long. when it's done, just jump in the shower and take the foil out in there...wash your hair and condition it really well. then you're done. it'll look great! :)

You really need to rethink the red because red dye washes out very fast weather you get it done at the salon or at home. And when it fades it doesn't look very good. Good luck to you
